Yesterday my husband signed up for his first triathlon, which just so happens to be the same one I am doing as well. After signing up, he decided to talk a little smack…
Yep, he wants to beat me at the race. And of course, there is no way that I am going to let that happen! He is a great athlete, and picks up just about everything sports related pretty naturally. But of course, I can not let him beat me! I am super competitive too, so now that he put the challenge out there, I am all in! After all, there’s nothing wrong with a little healthy competition, right? Felipe thinks so too!!
I am very motivated by others around me, especially with my recent entry into the world of triathlon training. I am finding that I am pushing myself significantly harder in the pool when I swim with Meghann, since we are pretty much swimming at the same level right now. Seeing her in my peripherals every time I take a breath really helps to keep pushing me further and faster than I thought I was capable of doing.
Oh, and the most important part – competition between friends makes training so much more fun! Of course we could all go out day after day and just run a bunch of miles, and swim countless laps alone, but meeting up with a group makes it significantly more entertaining, and makes the time just fly by! I am so thankful to have found a group of people that provide a great dose of healthy competition!
Get ready Marcus, I am coming for you at the Top Gun Triathlon!
What about you? Do you have any training buddies that push you to be better? Do you enjoy being pushed, or would you rather try to push yourself alone, rather than against someone else?

BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
I train for races with my husband and my sister. I love that they train with me, but they really bring out my competitive side as the thought of them beating me makes me work even harder. Good luck to both of you on your tri!
You’ll kick butt!! I’m a firm believer that girls are tougher than boys! Child birth is a perfect example….
My husband is trying to get back into shape so he can apply to the Army’s Warrant Officer Program. Last night we went for a run. He hasn’t seriously run since he got out of the USMC in August 2010, so I thought for sure that I would be the one cheering him on.
And he beat the pants off me.
It’s so on.
Oh no way!? You have to get him now!!!
We motivate and push ourselves and each other!
Have fun! Nothing like a healthy competition
I completely agree
I need a training buddy…it keeps me inline!
I can go either way for the motivation, but training with someone is definitely more fun!!
A few months after I started dating my boyfriend, we did our first 5k together. Now he’s totally into running, has done 4 5ks, and wants to try a tri! It’s so fun having a partner who loves my hobby too. And yes, I love the competition! He beat my last 5k time by 2 seconds and still gloats about it!
