The Perfect Pair

Weekends are always nice for multiple reasons. 1. The obvious – no work 2. A nice, flexible schedule, including lots of exercise that you may not be able to fit in during the week! (That is what you were thinking, right?)

My Saturday mornings are almost always reserved for my long run days. This weekend was no different. I woke up bright and early to tackle 11 miles. The weather here in Tampa lately has been less than stellar, with the humidity climbing through the roof, so early morning runs are definitely necessary. As luck would have it, the temps here this weekend were pretty manageable, and I actually had a great run. The negative split the whole run (without trying to), and was able to hit my last 2 miles at goal pace. That is the biggest different between my Chicago Marathon Training plan and others that I have done – goal pace miles thrown into long runs. I have high expectations that this will be an effective training tactic!

After my run, I met up with my sister Emily and friend Allison, and we walked up to our local Lululemon store for a little Saturday morning yoga! I have been to the class a couple of times, but never right after my run – I think I will be doing this much more often! It is the perfect pair! One of my biggest parts of training that I neglect (as most of you know) is stretching. Practicing yoga right after a run was exactly what my muscles needed. I was definitely tired when doing some of the lunge-type poses, but anything that targeted my hamstrings and butt was awesome! I am definitely sold!

By the way, if you are in the Tampa area, the Lululemon store in Hyde Park is hosting a Baptiste yoga workshop on Saturday, June 30th! What is Baptiste Yoga? “Baron Baptiste’s method, called Power Yoga, is a vigorous physical practice in which some studios teach in a room with the heat turned up. Baptiste’s method emphasizes personal power and empowerment. The yoga practice is seen as a way to personal transformation on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. Students become healthier in mind, body and spirit by taking control of their lives and making positive changes.” (Source). It is completely complimentary (like all the classes at Lululemon), and will be the Bay Area’s first introduction to this type of practice. I will definitely be going to the workshop, and you should too! It will be from 8am-10am at the store. It should be an incredibly fun experience.

So then yesterday, Marcus and I hopped on our bikes for a 90 minute ride. We are definitely having a hard time fitting cycling into our crazy schedules, and I was thrilled we were able to get out. There was quite a head wind working against us, so we had to work pretty hard. I think we were being punished for missing so many days in the saddle ;) All in all, it was a really great ride!

So let’s back up…

My sister Emily lives in Ohio, so why was she in town?! Well we have been scheming for the past 6-8 weeks about a nice surprise for my Dad for Father’s Day. Yesterday was his birthday as well, so needless to say it was quite a big day in my family! She flew in on Friday and we were able to surprise my Dad! I took a photo of him (for the blog, of course), and then proceeded to show it to him.

Who was in the background?! None other than my sister – we got him good! He was beyond surprised and could not have received a better Father’s Day and birthday gift! We had an amazing weekend filled with family time and fun for all. We squeezed a lot into the two and half days that Emily was here – check it out!

I hope you all had a chance to spend some time with your Dad, or at least wish him a Happy Father’s Day! My dad has always gone way above and beyond for my brother, my sister, and myself, so it is pretty amazing to be able to dedicate a day solely to him!

How was everyone’s workouts this weekend? Did you get in any extra sweat sessions than normal!? Did you do anything special for your dad this weekend?

I love Power Yoga! Try to fit it in every Friday. I have also heard it is good, to do a yoga class, and then go for your run since your body is all warmed up and stretched out!

I didn’t get my workouts in this weekend :( I spent it sick and resting my body (also a serious necessity that can often be overlooked imo). Normally, I’m with you, good solid workout always happens on the weekend! I like to use it as my chance to do something different. Run a new route, try a new workout etc.

Sounds like a GREAT weekend! And how wonderful to have that time with family. I’m always so thankful my family lives close. I bet it meant a lot to you to have that time together. :)

And you’re right – running and yoga go so well together!

Long runs on Saturday mornings are fantastic… unless you stay up to late on Friday. ;) I too like yoga after a run. I’ve never gone to a class afterwards, but I like to pop in a yoga video.

What fun pics! Winnie is wonder doggie! Our Santa Barbara Lululemon offers yoga classes too, though I can go all I want to the Spectrum where I teach. As for your dad surprise, how neat that you are making such loving memories for your dad! We still talk about the surprise party my sister set up for my dad’s 75th. He LOVED it!

Nice! Sounds like you had a fantastic Father’s Day weekend! I’m in the midst of a two week transition between competitive seasons, so I enjoyed a weekend with NO EXERCISE! I didn’t get a chance to see my dad as everyone at my place was battling viral gastroenteritis so I wasnt able to have my dad over for the BBQ we had planned.
